A Creative Life Update: What do I wanna do? New Work & New Site Updates
Aug 12, 2024
A little update about all the things going on in my creative life right now. Covering new job prospects, ambitions, wins, losses and more.
New Work: Pet Concierge
Since transitioning to freelance work after being laid off, I recently completed a logo project for a pet concierge client. The client initially requested that I recreate a sketch they had made in Word. While fulfilling their request, I also decided to provide an alternative design that incorporated my professional insights and expertise.
Ultimately, the client chose the recreation of their original sketch, expressing satisfaction with the outcome. This experience reinforced the importance of understanding and respecting the client's vision while offering guidance on design principles. Striking a balance between client preferences and professional recommendations is key to building a strong reputation as a designer.
Project Details:
Client: NJ Pet Concierge
Request: Recreate a logo sketch made in Word
Key Learnings:
Balancing client preferences with professional design knowledge is essential for a successful collaboration.
Educating clients on design fundamentals can help them make informed decisions and appreciate your expertise.
Reflections:
I'm pleased with the work I delivered, particularly in going the extra mile to provide a comprehensive presentation deck showcasing logo variations and a concise guide on their appropriate usage. The client's positive response to this additional effort validates my commitment to providing exceptional service and exceeding client expectations. Overall, I consider this project a fulfilling and successful collaboration.
Freelance in General
I’ve been on a rollercoaster journey these past few months as I explore the endless possibilities for my career. My interests are vast and ever-evolving, with new passions sparking almost daily. It’s been both thrilling and terrifying to navigate where I belong amidst this sea of opportunities.
I crave the freedom to experiment and never want to stop honing my skills. As a recently laid-off designer, freelancing seemed like the obvious choice, despite my nagging imposter syndrome. I doubted whether I had what it takes but decided to dive in anyway. Much to my surprise, I’ve already secured two regular clients, and new connections are blossoming each week!
Embarking on this new chapter in my creative journey, I’m simultaneously excited and petrified. There’s a whirlwind of unfamiliarity and pushing through the discomfort has been challenging. Questions about contracts, invoicing, and pricing have flooded my mind, but I’m gradually finding answers through experience, trial and error, and the invaluable support of my peers.
I don’t know what the future holds for this path I’ve chosen, but I’m ready to embrace every twist and turn!
Site Upgrade!
I’ve been gradually updating my website, adding a section dedicated entirely to my illustrations! Over the past few months, I’ve reignited my passion for illustration (as you may have noticed on my Instagram), and I’m eager to pursue more illustration roles. I needed a more professional platform than Instagram to showcase my work, so I created a brand-new page on my site exclusively for my illustrations, replacing the previous 'Misc.' page since there was significant overlap. I couldn't be more excited about it!
That’s all the news I have for now. Wishing all my fellow creatives a fantastic rest of the week! May your computers remain cool, and may invoices roll in like a gentle stream.
